Introduction: The participation of fathers during pregnancy can increase the survival rate of mother and baby. Despite the undeniable role of fathers in improving prenatal care received by mothers and improving pregnancy and childbirth outcomes, there have been limited studies in this field. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the benefits and obstacles of fathers' participation in order to achieve the promotion of health care and midwifery services.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted as a review in the form of reviewing articles from Google scholar, Springer, Pubmed databases for English sources and Magiran, Iranmedex and academic jihad database for Persian sources along with past library studies during 2010-2024. By studying the abstract and title of the articles and considering the entry and exit criteria, finally 8 Persian and 39 English articles were included in the study.
Results: Among the benefits of fathers' participation in the process of pregnancy and childbirth, we can mention the strengthening of marital relations, reduction of complications of pregnancy, childbirth and newborns, facilitating the acceptance of prenatal care, reducing smoking and increasing the responsibility of fathers. Also, the lack of awareness and incomplete information levels of fathers in the field of pregnancy and childbirth, demographic, economic, social, cultural factors, deficiencies in the provision of services by the health care system, as insufficient attention to the importance of the role of fathers, marital relations and fathers' relations with their parents, have been expressed as obstacles to their participation in the process of prenatal care and childbirth.
Conclusion: Considering the importance of the role of fathers in the process of pregnancy and childbirth, it is appropriate that policymakers and health care professionals strive to reduce maternal and newborn complications by increasing the level of awareness of fathers and also by removing obstacles to their participation during pregnancy and childbirth.
