Introduction: Sleeping is an essential part of living. In addition, poor quality sleep can lead to a variety of physical and mental disorders. On the other hand, job stress is one of the main factors effective in reducing productivity in organizations and causing physical and mental complications in personnel. Considering that in most nurses, occupational stress and sleep problems reduce sleep time and reduce their work power, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and job stress in nurses working in educational hospitals of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in 2014.
Methods: This is a Cross sectional study. The questionnaires were distributed to 168 nurses working in educational hospitals of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences selected via convenience sampling method. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics (frequency, mean and standard deviation) were utilized and in order to analyze the relationship between qualitative data, Chi-square and Pearson correlation tests were used at a significant level of 5%.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of sleep quality and job stress were 7.32 ± 3.45 and 138.84 ± 38.38, respectively. The findings of this study showed that sleep quality in different age groups (P-value= 0.03) and work experience (P-value =0.01) had a significant difference. The relationship between sleep quality and job stress is significant (P-value 0.003).
Conclusion: The results of the research showed that there is a significant relationship between job stress and sleep quality in nurses. Therefore, by controlling and improving sleep quality in nurses, the level of job stress in the nursing staff can be reduced.
