Introduction: Familiarity with Quran is considered as one of the most important and influential factors in mental health. However, it should be noted that the phenomenon of the increase in marriage age and subsequently the occurrence of permanent single life creates disturbances such as prevalence of mental disorders, a variety of social corruption, the crisis of sexual desire and so on. This study with the aim of investigating the relationship between familiarity with Quran and mental health of young unmarried people was accomplished in the city of Jiroft in 2016.
Methods: This study is a case-control one. The case group consisted of 69 single young people within the age group of 32.5 ± 8.60 who were learning Quran (familiar with Quran) and the control group (unfamiliar with Quran) was made of 74 students of Jiroft Medical University within the age group of 32.9 ± 5.50 .Goldberg mental health questionnaire was applied to collect data. In order to analyze data, independent t-test, chi-square test, Pearson correlation test and SPSS20 statistical software were used.
Results: In the investigation of the relationship between mental health and personal characteristics, a significant relationship was found only with the age (P<0.05). The results of this study showed that young unmarried people familiar with Quran had better mental health than those unfamiliar with Quran (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study and considering the difficulties and complexities imposed on the marriage of Iranian youth, one of the key ways to prevent the outbreak of libido in young unmarried people is to strengthen the faith through getting familiar with Quran and practicing God's commands.
